The Bull's Head Jazz Club

The Bull’s Head is a Grade II listed riverside pub and one of the most important jazz venues in British history. Situated at 373 Lonsdale Road, a short walk from Barnes Bridge station, it has presented live jazz every night since November 1959, earning it the nickname “the suburban Ronnie Scott’s.”
History of the Building
A pub has stood on this site since at least the seventeenth century. Young’s Brewery acquired the site in 1831. The present building was constructed in 1846, replacing an earlier structure. Overlooking the Thames, the pub is now protected from high tides by a concrete wall across the road.
The Jazz Club
In November 1959 landlord Albert Tolley removed the snooker tables from the backroom and introduced live jazz – just days after Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club opened on Gerrard Street in Soho. Under Tolley’s management (1959–1982), the Bull’s Head became an essential stop for major British and international jazz musicians.
Dan Fleming took over in 1982 and expanded the programming to include blues and rock alongside jazz. In 2013 Geronimo Inns (a wholly owned subsidiary of Young & Co.) assumed control. The pub closed briefly for refurbishment in mid-2013 and reopened with a new jazz room, “The Jazz Room” (converted from the former Thai kitchen known as “The Stables”), across the courtyard, seating sixty with standing room for thirty more.
Notable Musicians
The list of performers reads like a history of British jazz:
- Humphrey Lyttelton performed monthly for forty-two years – the longest residency in the venue’s history
- Ronnie Scott, Stan Tracey, Tubby Hayes, Johnny Dankworth, and Cleo Laine were regular visitors
- International names included Coleman Hawkins, Ben Webster, Blossom Dearie, and Sheila Jordan
- Later performers included Jeff Beck, Charlie Watts, and Jamie Cullum
Recognition
In 2009, at its fiftieth anniversary, the Brecon Jazz Festival named the Bull’s Head one of twelve venues that made the most important contribution to jazz in the United Kingdom – alongside Ronnie Scott’s, the Concorde Club in Eastleigh, Band on the Wall in Manchester, and others.
The Venue Today
The Bull’s Head presents jazz seven nights a week in its dedicated Jazz Room. The pub includes the Melrose Room overlooking the river and the Bolan Room for dining. It serves seasonal British food, cask ales, craft beers, and wines. On Boat Race day, the pub hosts special events near the finish line, with Sunday roasts, live jazz, and activities for children.
