Barnes High Street: Shops and Restaurants

Barnes High Street and Church Road form the commercial heart of the village, running from Barnes Green westward to Barnes Bridge station. What distinguishes Barnes from most London high streets is its extraordinary concentration of independent businesses — a 2014 Local Data Company survey found that 96.6% of shops in Barnes were independently owned, making it one of the highest proportions in the United Kingdom.
Character and Setting
The High Street sits within the Barnes Green Conservation Area, and its character is shaped by modest two- and three-storey Victorian and Edwardian buildings. Rose House, a Grade II listed seventeenth-century building on the High Street, is one of the oldest surviving structures. There are no large chain supermarkets or department stores — the largest retailers are a small Marks & Spencer Food Hall and an independent pharmacy.
Key Restaurants
Riva (169 Church Road) has been Barnes’s most celebrated restaurant for over 30 years. Andrea Riva’s northern Italian cooking has attracted a loyal following, including numerous local celebrities. The restaurant is known for its unfussy, seasonal menu and its famously direct proprietor.
Rick Stein Barnes (Tideway Yard, 125 Mortlake High Street) occupies the former Depot brasserie on the Thames riverfront at the eastern edge of Barnes. Rick Stein acquired the site in 2016 and reopened it in March 2017, offering his signature seafood dishes in a riverside setting with panoramic views.
HomeSW13 (92–94 Church Road) is a modern British restaurant that opened in September 2024, serving comforting, seasonal dishes in a relaxed neighbourhood setting.

Specialist Shops
Barnes supports a range of independent specialist retailers uncommon for a neighbourhood of its size:
- Olympic Studios Records (66 Church Road) — independent vinyl shop celebrating the recording heritage of Olympic Studios
- The Barnes Bookshop — independent bookseller with regular author events
- The Real Cheese Shop (62 Barnes High Street) — specialist cheesemonger established since 1985
- Sun Inn Flowers (Church Road) — family-run florist for over thirty years
Alongside its specialist retailers, Barnes High Street supports everyday businesses including a pharmacy, dry cleaners, newsagent, and several charity shops.

Barnes Farmers’ Market
Held every Saturday from 08:30 to 14:00 in the Essex House Surgery car park on Barnes Green, the farmers’ market brings together local producers selling seasonal fruit and vegetables, bread, cheese, meat, fish, and prepared foods. It is one of the oldest farmers’ markets in London. For more on the market’s history, the London Farmers’ Markets network, and seasonal highlights, see Markets and Farmers’ Markets.
Church Road
Church Road extends eastward from Barnes Green, forming a second retail strip. It includes cafés, estate agents, hairdressers, and the entrance to Olympic Studios. The road connects Barnes Pond to Barnes Bridge, and its pavement cafés give the street a relaxed, continental feel in summer. Challenges
Like many independent high streets, Barnes faces pressures from rising commercial rents, business rates, and competition from online retail. The Barnes Community Association and local councillors have worked to secure the Conservation Area designation and resist changes that would alter the village character. The absence of a large supermarket is both a distinguishing feature and an occasional inconvenience noted by residents.
